Payroll Specialist

Payroll / Benefits & Total Rewards
Permanent
Hybrid - Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada
Posted on January 24, 2025

Great payroll position with a large, fast-paced, and complex Canadian company with a friendly and down-to-earth corporate culture. Great opportunity for a payroll professional who wants to work with a tightknit, collaborative, and supportive payroll team.

Who- the Company:

Our client is a very well-established, interesting, and reputable company with operations throughout Canada and the US. SWIM has placed many people at this company over the years with positive feedback on the team culture. The company has best listed on “Top Employer” lists.

What- the Role:

Our client is seeking a new Payroll Specialist who will process hourly payroll for 600 to 800 BC-based employees. The Payroll Specialist will report into the Payroll Manager and will work on a Payroll Team in the corporate head office. There are also folks in HR and Payroll working at operational sites who the corporate Payroll team works closely with. The new Specialist will have a portfolio of 3 operational sites/subsidiary offices across British Columbia. 2 of these locations are unionized and the Payroll Specialist will be interpreting and complying with a few collective agreements. The Payroll team uses a sophisticated payroll system, as well as a timekeeping system and plenty of Excel. The Payroll team does cross-training so that they can back each other up when someone on the close-knit team is away on vacation or on sick days. For this reason, it’s beneficial if the Payroll Specialist has processed salaried payroll or processed payroll in other Cdn provinces or US states, or if they have benefits administration- but the company can also train their new Specialist in these areas when needed. SWIM will provide interested candidates with a thorough job description.

Who- the Candidate:

We are looking for a payroll professional who has at least 4 years’ experience processing hourly and unionized payroll for at least 500 employees. Experience collaborating with a payroll team is required (as opposed to a 1-person payroll function)

  • Excellent relationship building skills- with folks working at the operational sites, in the corporate office, and in various departments including payroll, HR, accounting, etc.
  • We are looking for problem-solvers with excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communications skills and a passion for internal customer service.
  • We are looking for people who operate with integrity, urgency, and professionalism.
  • PCP designation highly preferred and the company will provide relevant professional development support for ongoing payroll education.

How Much:

Competitive base salary commensurate with level of skills, experience, and education- in the range of $60,000 to $85,000, with a sweet spot in the $70,000s. To get into the $80,000s range, candidates will truly need to have all the desired qualifications and many years of relevant work experience. The company will provide their new Payroll Specialist with a solid overall compensation package, including a performance-based bonus, an RRSP match, paid vacation and sick days, PCP professional development support, and excellent health, dental, & vision benefits.

Where:

HYBRID. The company is headquartered in Burnaby. Full-time in office for the first 4-6 weeks during training, and after that the Payroll Specialist can choose to work from the office 3, 4, or 5 days a week (i.e. max of 2 days/week work from home).
