Diverse, fulfilling, and well-rounded management role within a complex, global, and public company headquartered in Vancouver. Three Senior Accountants as direct reports. Competitive total compensation package.

Who- the Company:

Our client is a global publicly-listed organization with a complex, exciting, and interesting story- SWIM can fill you in!  The company is based in Vancouver and also has major operations overseas.  The employee population size in Vancouver is approximately 65 people, in a mix of corporate departments such as accounting & finance, legal, administration, IT, HR, etc. Total company size of well over 1000 employees. This company has a reputation in Vancouver and beyond for hiring top talent, and for providing their employees with interesting and challenging work in a positive and professional environment.

What- the Opportunity:

On behalf of our client, SWIM is seeking a new Manager, Financial Reporting. The new Manager will lead a global team of four (4) Accountants, all of whom will be direct reports into the Manager. This is a leadership role involving people management, coaching, overseeing and reviewing accounting work completed by the accountants, business operations, ad hoc process improvement projects, etc. Along with their Accountants, this Manager is responsible for a portfolio of ~12 entities (statutory accounts, joint ventures, etc.).
The Manager will also have two (2) peer Managers who each have their own formal/official direct reports, but the Accountants also spend some of their time supporting other Managers (and vice-versa), so there is a lot of team collaboration. The Accounting team consists of ~12 people in the Vancouver office (and many more in other countries), plus there are other colleagues in other areas of finance such as treasury and FP&A. Systems used include a cloud-based ERP, a consolidation tool, a financial reporting tool, and Excel.
There is usually overtime during a week or so of quarter-end and for a few weeks at the peak of year-end, but for the most part organized and hardworking Managers at this company can obtain better work/life balance than you’d see at most other global public companies or large public practice firms. SWIM will provide interested candidates with a thorough job description.

Who- the Candidate:

  • At least 6 years and ideally 9+ years progressive experience in accounting and financial reporting, including public company reporting.
  • CPA accounting designation (or International equivalent) is required.
  • Excellent leadership, people management, coaching, mentoring, and training skills are crucial in this role. Candidates must have experience leading at least 2 direct reports, and ideally 4+ direct reports. Experience managing people or teams who live in another country is preferred.
  • We are looking for people who are resourceful, creative, and self-motivated problem solvers- this Manager will have the opportunity to address all sorts of interesting business issues and problems that crop up.
  • Experience working closely with external auditors.
  • There are a lot of deadlines to juggle in this role; therefore, excellent time management and organizational skills along with a process improvement mindset are all crucial.
  • Strong knowledge of both US GAAP and IFRS is preferred.
  • Training in a multi-national public practice firm is preferred.
  • Experience working in the corporate office of a global public company is preferred.
  • Top-notch communication skills are important- ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders across many countries.

Where:

Headquartered in the centre of downtown Vancouver’s financial district. Beautiful corporate offices with a great view! For the first couple months, the Manager will likely want to work from the office 4 or 5 days a week as they onboard and establish relationships with their colleagues.  Longer-term, the Manager can choose to work from home 2 days a week on a hybrid schedule.

How Much:

Base salary commensurate with relevant work experience, skills, qualifications, and education- likely in the range of $115,000 to $140,000. Please discuss your total compensation expectations in more detail with SWIM.  The Manager will also receive a performance-based bonus, a health allowance, an annual flexible spending allowance, professional development support (for CPA, for example), generous health & dental benefits, transit or parking allowance, and over 3 weeks of paid time off.
