Well-rounded Director-level role, leading total rewards for a high-growth and high-change not-for-profit organization that is doing important work in BC communities. Good work/life integration, solid benefits and overall compensation, hybrid work schedule (working ~2 days/week at home). Based in Surrey.

Who- the Company:

Our client is a not-for-profit values-based organization that provides essential programs and services to the communities they support. The organization is currently over 350 employees plus a Board of Directors, with a growing HR department.

What- the Role:

On behalf of our client, SWIM is seeking a Director, Total Rewards who will report directly into the Head of People & Culture. This is a newly created position due to the ongoing growth and positive change at the organization. The Director will lead a team of six (6) including two (2) direct reports (a Payroll & Benefits Manager and a Manager, Compensation) and three (3) indirect reports (all on the Payroll & Benefits team). There is also a Director, People & Culture (who leads business partnering, employee relations, talent acquisition, learning & development, etc.) and people in other P&C functions (Generalists, Advisors, Recruiter, etc) for a total P&C Team of 15.
The Director of Total Rewards will lead:

  • Compensation Strategy (the new Manager, Compensation will be directly supporting in this area).
  • Reward & Recognition Programs (the Manager, Compensation will also support this area).
  • Payroll (the Payroll Manager and their team do the hands-on payroll processing for the over 350 employees, almost entirely in BC, almost entirely salaried, entirely non-unionized).
  • Pension & Benefits Administration.
  • HR Analytics.
  • HRIS Optimization
  • Workforce Planning and Organizational Development (in partnership with other P&C leaders).

Who- the Candidate:

We are looking for an individual with at least 10 years of progressive human resources and total rewards work experience, with a focus on compensation (role evaluation, job descriptions and reclassifications, pay-for-performance bonus programs, recognition programs, performance management systems, etc.) and payroll (leading/supporting/coaching a payroll team, the Director doesn’t necessarily have to have hands-on processed the payroll before).
Experience working in a relevant sector is highly preferred- i.e. Government, NPO, and/or public sector– preferably supporting an employee population of at least 300 people.
Some form of HR education is required (a degree, certificate, diploma, CPHR designation, etc.), and CCP (Certified Compensation Professional) is particularly desirable for this role.
Experience using a sophisticated multi-module HRIS is important, and we are looking for candidates who are confident using technology.  Experience with post-implementation HRIS optimization and the ongoing implementation of new modules and functions is highly desirable. Proficiency in Excel is key in this role as both the Director and the Manager of Compensation will conduct Excel-based compensation analysis.
Qualified candidates will have a friendly, clear, and professional communication style, and will have a caring and compassionate approach. Natural leadership abilities are crucial in this role- we are looking for a Director who leads by example, walks the walk when it comes to embodying their personal and professional values, and who can hold their team accountable to deadlines while leading with empathy.

How Much:

Base salary is commensurate with skills, experience, and education related to HR and compensation, likely in the range of $108,000 to $138,000. The overall compensation package is very generous-  the new Director will be on a Pension Plan, will receive a competitive amount of paid time off (vacation days, personal days, sick days, extra time off in late December), and will also get professional development support (for CCP studies, for example), excellent health & dental benefits (100% employer paid), and a small transit subsidy.

Where:

HYBRID. The company is headquartered in Surrey, very close to a Skytrain station. There is both free and paid parking nearby. Initially the Director will work from the office 3-4 days a week as they are onboarding and building in-person relationships across the organization. Longer term, the Director can work from home ~2 days a week.
