Our client, a public sector organization in Alberta, is seeking an experienced Telecommunication Information Systems Technologist. This role will provide technical expertise across the communications and information systems that enable push-to-talk voice and data radio services. The successful candidate will help support the ongoing availability, reliability, security, testing, maintenance, and technical evolution of AFRRCS IT systems. This is a long-term contract opportunity for a hands-on infrastructure and systems professional with experience in secure, high-availability, operational technology or communications environments.
Who:
Our client operates and supports critical first responder communications infrastructure used by public safety agencies across Alberta. The environment includes communication technology systems, server infrastructure, virtualization, storage, monitoring, backup/recovery, operating systems, Active Directory, security tools, enterprise applications, and vendor-supported platforms. The successful candidate will work with AFRRCS technical teams, operations stakeholders, first responder agencies, vendors, service providers, and other IT specialists to support system readiness, upgrades, troubleshooting, documentation, reporting, and operational continuity.
You:
You are an experienced systems, infrastructure, or communications technology professional with strong hands-on experience supporting secure and highly available IT environments. You are comfortable working in a mission-critical setting where reliability, documentation, change control, cyber security, backup/recovery, testing, and operational readiness are essential. You bring practical experience with virtualization, server and storage platforms, Windows Active Directory, monitoring tools, patching, system testing, troubleshooting, and high-availability infrastructure. You can work independently, communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders, and support urgent operational issues when required.
Critical experience requirements include:
- Current Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer accreditation
- Current Secret Security Clearance, with proof available for submission
- Current criminal record check completed within the last 90 days, or ability to provide one quickly
- Experience with communication technology systems using virtualization, including at least two projects within the last 10 years where your involvement was longer than three months
- Ability to work fully on-site in the Edmonton / St. Albert area
- Ability to travel throughout Alberta to perform required services
- Experience supporting, testing, configuring, or maintaining enterprise IT systems in a secure, high-availability, or mission-critical environment
- Experience with server, storage, backup/recovery, monitoring, operating system, patching, and user account management activities
- Experience developing or executing test plans for system upgrades, enhancements, operational readiness, business continuity, disaster recovery, or major system changes
- Experience troubleshooting system failures, resolving performance issues, identifying risks, preparing status reports, and supporting technical documentation
Nice to have:
- IT-related degree, diploma, certificate, or active vendor certifications
- Experience with Sybase, VoIP, RoIP, syslog, or server management applications in a virtualized environment
- Experience supporting anti-virus software and intrusion detection services
- Experience with SAN technologies supporting high-availability or secure communication systems
- Experience configuring Windows Active Directory users and groups in alignment with security policies
- Experience with Dell servers, NetApp storage, Unitrends, LogLogic, Sourcefire, VMware, Hyper-V, Veeam, Red Hat, SolarWinds, CiscoPrime, or similar technologies
- Experience supporting first responder, public safety, emergency services, telecom, utility, government, transportation, or other critical infrastructure systems
- Experience with redundant hardware, hot standby, automated failover, disaster recovery, and deployment strategies designed to maintain application availability
- Experience working with internal teams, third-party service providers, equipment suppliers, and vendor-supported platforms
Compensation:
Hourly contract rate to be confirmed based on experience, availability, work arrangement, and overall fit.
