What- the Role:
Our client is hiring for a new Controller who will take on a variety of tasks. Reporting into the VP of Finance and directly managing the Assistant Controller and several designated Accountants. There is certainly opportunity for career development over the years and the leadership team is looking for a Controller who can steadily grow with the organization.
Responsibilities

Full-cycle accounting, including reviewing working papers and financial statements.

Providing direct management, mentorship, and training of the accounting team.

Valuation of fund portfolios.

Liaising with external auditors.

Reviewing and finalizing quarterly accounts statements for investors.

Ad hoc and scheduled financial analysis and financial modeling for leadership team, investors, and potential investors (including preparing a 5-year forecast for trustee meetings)

Preparing and reviewing materials for quarterly capital calls

Overseeing cashflow and accounts payable (hands-on AP processing conducted by accountants)

Reviewing weekly cash summaries

Reviewing the operating budget for the G&A team.

Working with external tax consultants at CPA firms on tax compliance and tax planning (Canadian and US, including T-forms and K-1s.)

Review of legal documents and contracts related to deals

Who- the Candidate:
Qualified candidates will be self-motivated and driven, with the ability to learn quickly and the willingness to seek out process improvements. The Controller will be preparing memos, reports, documents, and financial analyses for the CFO and other senior leaders, so ability to clearly convey accounting and financial information is important.

Qualified candidates will have 8+ years progressive experience in accounting and finance.

CPA designation (or International equivalent)
-
Training in a multi-national public practice accounting firm is preferred, preferably with a relevant client portfolio in financial services.

Candidates directly from a multi-national public practice at Senior Manager or perhaps Manager level will be considered.

Leadership and mentorship skills, including experience managing a team of 3+ direct reports.

Experience working in a similar role within a venture capital, private equity, financial services, investor relations, wealth management, or real estate investment trust firm.

Experience with Canadian and/or US tax compliance and tax planning is preferred, but not required.

Experience working in a similar role involving fund accounting and trust accounting, including communication with investors is highly preferred.

Detail-oriented, organized, professional, and efficient.

Excellent communication skills (written and spoken), with ability to prepare polished business documents and materials.

Systems savvy, particularly within Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Teams, etc.). Ability to learn new technologies and software (for example, an investor database). Experience with a financial system implementation, upgrade, or conversion project is a desirable qualification
