This is a very diverse FP&A leadership role that lends itself well to someone with a versatile skillset who can be both analytical and strategic. The new Director, FP&A will manage and mentor a Senior Financial Analyst and will report directly into the Chief Financial Officer. The Director FP&A will manage the company’s forecasts and operating plans, will analyze potential new projects and investment opportunities, and will make presentations that “tell the story behind the numbers” to the leadership team.

A reputable and successful company that was established over 30 years ago. The organization has an impressive leadership team, solid reputation, and interesting history, with business interests and major investments in a variety of areas, including real estate.  

What- the Role:  

On behalf of our client, SWIM is seeking to hire a new DirectorFinancial Planning & Analysis who will be a key player on the company’s collaborative finance team. This is a large and meaty role that is anticipated to evolve over the years as the Director gains more and more insight into the company’s current and future business plans. 
The Director will manage and mentor 1-2 Senior Financial Analysts and will report directly into the CFO. 
The Director, Financial Planning & Analysis will build out short and long-term financial models for the organization, and producing insightful management reports, strategic plans, and KPIs for the senior leadership team. The Director FP&A will also project manage finance-related initiatives across the organization. Responsibilities will be ever-evolving and will pertain to such areas as financial analysis, data analysis, investment analysis and due diligence, financial modeling, corporate finance, cash management, system optimisation, project work, and process improvement. 

What- the Responsibilities:  

The right candidate will grow the role as they get to know the business. Long-term, the C-Suite would love to see this individual progress and develop within the organization into even more senior leadership capacities. Below are the key responsibilities that the new Director FP&A will likely take on… 

  • Lead, mentor, and coach a Senior Financial Analyst direct report (which could increase soon to 2+ direct reports)  
  • Manage financial and strategic planning rhythms (short, medium, and long-term)
    • Annual operating plan
    • 5-year plan
    • Quarterly forecast
    • 24-month rolling forecast
  • Create, standardize, and maintain innovative and dynamic financial models in Excel, including cash flow models. 
  • Conduct Management Reporting (routine and ad hoc) 
  • Financial evaluation of new projects and acquisitions
  • Directly support the CFO and the CEO in the evaluation of new investment opportunities, including making presentations
  • Prepare investor reports and performance briefs for C-Suite and the Board 
  • Lead organization-wide and project specific strategic initiatives. Examples include advancement of profitability in income-producing assets, opportunity research, and potential acquisition due-diligence
  • Work with variety of department heads to fine-tune assumptions, run scenarios, and create insightful reports and KPIs to monitor performance vs plan
  • Collaborate with the technology team to design, maintain, and update database models that power the company’s budgeting and reporting capabilities. Improve and optimize ERP usage to increase efficiencies. Implement use of other tools and technologies such as Power BI, Power Query, and data visualization tools.
  • Research the economic fundamentals of new growth opportunities.

What- the Qualifications: 

  • At least 10 years’ progressive and relevant FP&A work experience (required). 
  • Experience working in mid-size, high-change, and entrepreneurial privately-held organization (preferred). 
  • Post-secondary education in commerce, economics, engineering, technology, or another related business field (required).  
  • CPA, CFA, CBV, and/or MBA- Finance viewed as a substantial asset (almost required). 
  • Project management and program management experience (highly preferred). 
  • Work experience in the real estate development sector (highly preferred). If no work experience in real estate, then an interest in/passion for the real estate industry and eagerness to learn the FP&A side of the business quickly.  
  • Treasury and cash management experience (preferred). 
  • Highly proficient in Excel, with ability to build financial models from scratch (required). Experience with Power BI, Power Query, and other advanced reporting/visualization tools (preferred). Experience with system implementation, optimization and/or upgrades (preferred). 
  • Passion for data and analytics and a solid understanding of data structures. 
  • Confident and articulate, with excellent written, verbal, and non-verbal communication skills. 
  • High performance and high potential individual with lots of growth potential in an entrepreneurial, well-capitalized organization.

How Much:

Very competitive and generous total compensation, comprised of base and a solid bonus target. Please discuss further with SWIM.
